Chobe Savanna Lodge
East Caprivi - Namibia
Chobe Savanna Lodge is set on the banks of the Chobe River on an expanse of vast floodplains and savanna, called the Puku Flats, so called because of the rare Puku antelope is found in the area. After a 15 kilometer boat cruise from the town of Kasane one reaches this remarkable open-style thatch lodge, located on a peninsular of land, offering 270° views of the river.
What makes Chobe Savanna Lodge so unique is that it is the only lodge with uninterrupted views of the Chobe National Park. The lodge has it's own select atmosphere reflecting the rich and colourful African culture, traditions, customs and architecture. The emphasis at this here is on relaxation, leisurely activities and superb game viewing. As it is set amongst an abundance of diverse and prolific wildlife, lion, large herds of elephant and buffalo, frequently come to the rivers edge to drink and graze.
The main building at the lodge, has been constructed using a combination of thatch and timber balustrades. There is a lounge, library, dining room and the open-sided 'game viewing bar', a most popular area to quench your thirst. Furniture, sourced from as far away as Asia and the Americas, has been harmonized with the African inspired interior, to create a unique 'savanna feel' to the lodge environment. There is also a splash pool, with lazy-loungers and sun shades provided.
Guests stay in 12 luxurious bungalows. Each one is tastefully furnished, set in stylish thatch and brick suites. An en-suite bathroom, twin beds, air-conditioning, complimentary mini-bar, tea/coffee station and a ceiling fan are standard. Chill and relax on the verandah, some overlook the savannah.
What makes this part of Chobe so special is the safari experience on offer, by boat, along the Chobe River. It is unlike any other water-based safari experience in Namibia! Guests can expect to see vast herds of elephants and giraffe as well as huge buffalo herds moving across the floodplains. There are also a number of antelope species such as the endemic Puku and Sable Antelopes. Along the river sightings of predators such as leopard skulking out of the bushes for a drink or lions prowling Puku Flats are a common as well.
Activities at the lodge are water-based. Excursions on the river are in small, maneuverable private motor boats ideal for closer wildlife encounters without disturbing the animals. Guided walking safaris along the river banks, accompanied by professional guides, fishing (catch and release only), birding and photography are favourite pastimes in and around the lodge. A boat trip to a nearby traditional village, where authentic tribal Namibian life can be encountered is also popular.
Children are welcome, but parents/guardians must take note there are no babysitting services.
