Birds of Namibia
Introduction: Red-headed queleas (Quelea erythrops) are found on grassland near water. They are a highly gregarious species with flocks of up to 1,000 birds fairly common.Distribution: Kwando River region and western Bwabwata National Park only.
Diet: Eats insects and grass seeds.
Description: A small weaver with short wings and tail as well as a short, conical bill. Erythrops is Greek for 'red cheek'.
Breeding: Males weave a nest made mainly from leaf strips and grass, complete with a side-top entrance. Quelea is a Latin translation for 'quail' believed to refer to the streaked upperparts and 'buzzing flight'.
Size: 11cm. Weight: 20g.
