Birds of Namibia

Ostriches belong to the Family Struthionidae the only family of its kind in Africa. They are the largest living birds and although flightless can move quickly across the ground. Characteristic features include long legs, near naked thighs and a foot with 2 toes; the inner toe has a long nail used in defence and fighting. Eyes are exceptionally large with appropriately-sized eyelashes. The beak is short and has a rounded tip on a feathery head and neck. Their diet consists of mainly ground plant matter or low lying vegetation. Eggs are laid in a nest, scraped in sandy soil.
